Real County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #5: Real County (Leakey, Texas)

Real County is in the Texas Hill Country, 100 miles northwest of San Antonio. Real County is home to the headwaters of both the Frio and Nueces rivers which form the ridges, canyons and valleys of the region. Home to roaming Lipan Indians, it was the site of the last Indian raid in Southwest Texas in 1881. The victims, Catherine McLauren and her teenage neighbor Alan Lease were the first burials in the Leakey Cemetery. Legends persist of buried or lost Spanish treasures and to this day treasure hunters search the hills for gold.

The county is named for Julius Real, a Prohibitionist and the only Republican in the Texas Senate when the county was created in 1913.

The county seat of Real County is Leakey (pronounced Lakey), named for John Leakey and his wife Nancy who were among the first Anglo-American settlers of the area in 1856.

The 1918 courthouse was designed to look like a fortress and they did a good job of it. The short and squatty appearance made us doubt at first if it even was the courthouse. The structure is now overshadowed by large live oaks that are more impressive than the building itself.
