![]() July 08, 2008 | Comal County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #7: Comal County (New Braunfels, Texas) Comal County is located in south central Texas, northeast of San Antonio. The springs and the creek found here were named Comal by the Spanish explorers in the early 1700’s. Comal, a Spanish word for a “flat dish”, probably referred to the wide, flat basin in which the creek flowed. The Old San Antonio Road ran through the area as early as the 1690’s and a short lived mission was established here in 1756. On March 21, 1845 Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels founded New Braunfels (named for Braunfels, Germany, “Texas Carl’s” hometown) which would become the county seat the next year when Comal county was formed. The Prince was Commissioner General of Adelsverein (Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas) and so it is no surprise that hundreds of German Immigrants followed him and settled in the town of New Braunfels. The courthouse was built in 1898 and designed by J. Riely Gordon which is almost identical to the one he designed in Giddings. Unlike the one in Giddings, which is on a large courthouse lawn, the building in New Braunfels sits on a corner lot in front of a traffic circle. The building retains the four entrances on each corner, however, because Gordon’s plans assumed it would be in the middle of a square. This courthouse proved to be one of the hardest to photograph. Between the traffic circle, traffic, trees and a dismal overcast sky I have to say I'm disappointed in the final result. Maybe one day I'll find myself in New Braunfels again and have better luck.
