Texas County Courthouse Project #10: Wilson County (Floresville, Texas)

Wilson County is named for James C. Wilson, an Englishman who migrated to the Republic of Texas in 1837. After the United States annexed Texas, Mexico, who never recognized Texas’ independence in 1836 or the annexation in 1845, began making raids into San Antonio. In response, Sam Houston ordered General Alexander Somerville to lead 700 volunteers into northern Mexico as a sign of force. James Wilson joined the Somervelle Expedition where he was captured but later escaped, possibly saving him from joining the ill-fated Mier Expedition. He later became a legislator in the Texas House of Representatives.

In the early 1800’s, Don Francisco Flores de Abrego immigrated to this area from the Canary Islands. The town that grew around his home and ranch would eventually become known as Floresville.

In the 1870’s Judge Andrew G. Pickett (see cornerstone above) began growing peanuts in Floresville and the crop would spread throughout the area. Floresville is now known as the “Peanut Capitol of Texas”.

The Italianate style courthouse was built in 1884. The original brick was covered with plaster in 1936.
