Texas County Courthouse Project #12: San Jacinto County (Coldspring, Texas)

San Jacinto County was established on August 13, 1870. The county is named for the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution and for the San Jacinto River that runs through the area. The San Jacinto River is said to have been named for either the aquatic plants growing in the river when it was discovered (jacinto is a Spanish word for the hyacinth plant) or for St. Hyacinth, with the possibility that it was discovered on August 17, St. Hyacinth’s Day. Today the Sam Houston National Forest covers 60% of the county.

The county seat of San Jacinto went through a series of name changes in the 1800’s. Originally named Coonskin before becoming Fireman’s Hill in 1847, the name was changed to Cold Springs in1850 and then finally to Coldspring in 1894. The town sits on the original land grant given to Robert Rankin in 1835 by the Mexican Government. Rankin was a veteran of the American Revolution, served as a delegate in the Danville Convention that drafted Kentucky’s first Constitution and was a friend of Jesse Grimes and Sam Houston.

The Classical Revival style courthouse was built in 1917. After the original courthouse was destroyed in a fire the entire center of town was moved to its current location. There are courthouses that will take me years, not to mention hundreds of miles, to get to...and then there’s this one. Only a few miles from my parent’s house, no other courthouse will be as easy to check off my list as this one was.
