Polk County Courthouse

July 15, 2008 | Polk County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #13 Polk County (Livingston, Texas)

Created as one of the original 23 counties formed after Texas became a state, Polk County is named for U.S. President James K. Polk. Polk was instrumental in the annexation of Texas and that position helped him win the presidential election in 1845. On December 29th of that year, Polk fulfilled his campaign promise and signed legislation that made Texas the 28th state. Polk also ordered troops into Mexico which would eventually lead to the Mexican War. The result was Mexico’s recognition of Texas’ annexation and the transfer of territory to the United States that included California, New Mexico and the entire Southwest.

In 1835 Moses L. Choate purchased land in present day Polk County and by 1839 the small town of Springfield was established. When Polk County was created in 1846, Choate donated 100 acres of land for the new county seat. When a post office was in place Springfield became Livingtson in honor of Choate’s hometown of Livingston, Tennessee.

In 1969 the Livingston Dam was completed on the Trinity River creating the 82,600 acre Lake Livingston.

The current courthouse was built in 1923. This was the second courthouse on a quick three county tour I took with my Dad and my brother.
