Texas County Courthouse Project #18: Robertson County (Franklin, Texas)

The Texas Association of Nashville headed by its empresario, Sterling Clack Robertson, was a group of 600 families who settled in “Robertson’s Colony” in the 1830’s. Robertson was a Captain in the Texas Rangers, a delegate at the convention in Washington-on-the-Brazos, signed both the Texas Declaration of Independence and Constitution and served as a Senator in the Republic of Texas Congress. On December 14, 1837, Robertson County was formed.

The county seat of Robertson County moved around from “Old” Franklin to Wheelock in 1850 to Owensville in 1856 to Calvert in 1870 and then to Morgan in 1879. The name “Morgan” had already been taken by another post office so they went full circle and changed the name to Franklin in honor of the original county seat. The original Franklin was named for Francis Slauter who was the Chief Justice of Robertson’s Colony (responsible for filing deeds) and who owned the land on which the town stood. A biography of Francis Slauter, however, states that Franklin was named by Sterling Robertson for Franklin, Tennessee a town southeast of Nashville.

The Second Empire style courthouse in Franklin was built in 1882.
