![]() August 01, 2008 | Burleson County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #28: Burleson County (Caldwell, Texas) Burleson County was founded in 1846 and named for General Edward Burleson, veteran of the battle of New Orleans where he served with his father, stormed San Antonio with Ben Milam and helped defeat Santa Anna at San Jacinto. He helped establish Hays County in San Marcos and donated the land to build the courthouse there. Caldwell was named for Mathew Caldwell, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, veteran of the Texas Revolution and a Captain in the Texas Rangers. He was known as “Old Paint” because of his spotted whiskers. The courthouse was built in 1927 and replaced an 1890 courthouse.
