![]() August 02, 2008 | Montgomery County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #30: Montgomery County (Conroe, Texas) 136 years after French explorer La Salle crossed through the area, Andrew Jackson Montgomery set up a small trading post. The trading post grew into a town named Montgomery and when a county was created by the Republic of Texas, it took the name from its largest settlement and became Montgomery County. Andrew Montgomery was a veteran of the Texas Revolution and fought at the battle of San Jacinto. Later in his life he served as vice president of the 1860 convention that nominated Sam Houston for President of the United States. Montgomery served as the original county seat but when the railroad bypassed the town the courthouse was moved to Conroe. Isaac Conroe, the town’s namesake, operated a sawmill on Stewart Creek. When the railroad made the sawmill one of its stops, they printed tickets that stated “Conroe switch to ____”. Conroe’s Switch was born. Later shortened to Conroe’s and then to just Conroe. Issac Conroe fought in the Civil War….for the North. I doubt many places in Texas are named after Union soldiers, but Conroe is one of them. The courthouse is a pretty nondescript building. Built in 1936 and then remodeled in the 50’s (never a good thing) it's nice, but not very memorable.
