Blanco County Courthouse

August 03, 2008 | Blanco County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #31: Blanco County (Johnson City, Texas)

Explorers first crossed the Blanco River in 1721. The name Blanco, meaning “white” in Spanish, comes from the color of the limestone rocks found on the banks and in the river bed. Blanco County was formed in 1856.

With the county came a new county seat. Blanco was formed in the center of the seat and constructed a courthouse in 1860 and replaced it in 1885 with a new limestone structure. In 1890 an election was held and Johnson City was selected as the new county seat. The man who helped move the county seat was the city’s namesake, James Polk Johnson. Johnson was the nephew of Lyndon B. Johnson’s grandfather.

The current courthouse in Johnson City was built in 1916, using the same limestone that the Blanco River was named for. The Old Blanco County Courthouse is in Blanco and has recently been restored after years of neglect, including a former owner who had the intention of moving it brick by brick to his ranch to be used as a residence. I plan on making a trip to Blanco to see it in the future.
