Texas County Courthouse Project #32: Mason County (Mason, Texas)

As more Germans moved to Texas in the 1840’s, some began to search for more land to the west. As the frontier moved westward the danger of Indians increased. To protect the settlers, Fort Mason was established in 1851. The fort was named for either Lt. George T. Mason who was killed in action during the Mexican War, or a popular U.S.general of the time named Richard Barnes Mason who had recently died. Mason County was created in 1858.

Two courthouses burned before the current building was constructed in 1909. It sits on a huge courthouse square. The courthouse was repainted to match the original colors in the early 1980's.
