Burnet County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #34: Burnet County (Burnet, Texas)

To help protect settlers on the western frontier a string of forts were established from Ft. Worth to Uvalde. One of those was Fort Croghan, named for George Croghan, veteran of both the War of 1812 and Mexican War. A town grew up around the protection of the fort named Hamilton, after an early settler named John Hamilton. When the county was formed in 1852, Hamilton was chosen the county seat and a courthouse was constructed. Because of the other Hamilton, Texas, which is the county seat of Hamilton County, the name was changed in 1858 to Burnet, the same name as the county.

Both the county and the county seat are named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the president of the ad interim government of the Republic of Texas from March 17 until October 22, 1836. His relationship with Sam Houston was notorious and they shared a hatred for each other that lasted their entire lives. He had to watch as Sam Houston became a hero of the revolution and assumed the presidency of the new Republic. Burnet served as Mirabeau B. Lamar's vice president and secretary of state under Texas’ first governor, James P. Henderson. Burnet lived a sad life, which included the death of three of his four children in child birth, the death of his wife, Hannah, in 1858 and the death of his one remaining son in the Civil War. Bitter about Sam Houston’s legacy until the very end, he died broke in 1870.

The courthouse is a modern style WPA building constructed in 1937. After coming from Llano’s courthouse to this one it was a little under-whelming at best.
