Texas State Capitol Building

August 12, 2008 | Texas State Capitol Building

While I was in Travis County taking a photograph of my 36th courthouse, I thought I might as well take one of my first state capitol building. I saved the best for first…

U.S. State Capitol Project #1: Texas

Austin, Texas

Constructed: 1882 – 1888

Texas: From the Caddo word “taysha”, which means “friend”. The Spanish used this word, spelling it “Tejas”, to refer to the Caddo Nation and eventually the entire area west of the Sabine River and north of the Rio Grande.

Austin: Named for the “Father of Texas”, Stephen F. Austin.

Pictured below: Upper left: the seven national seals of Texas (Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, United States). Upper right: interior view of the dome. Lower left: the House of Representatives chamber with the San Jacinto Battle Flag displayed behind the speaker's rostrum. Lower right: Detail of the Goddess of Liberty on top of the capitol dome.
