Panola County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #44: Panola County (Carthage, Texas)

After the Louisiana Purchase a long time border dispute between France and Mexico became a dispute between the United States and Mexico. In a compromise the area that would later become Panola County was designated as the Neutral Ground. After Texas won independence a permanent border between the U.S. and the Republic of Texas was established. A marker, the only one of its kind, still stands at the eastern edge of Panola County. Set in 1841 the landmark simply states “Merid. Boundary Established AD 1840” with the initials “U.S.” on one side and “R.T.” (for the Republic of Texas) on the other.

Panola County was named after Panola County, Mississippi. The county’s first Chief Justice, John Allison was a former cotton farmer from the Mississippi county and suggested the name. Panola is an Indian word for cotton.

Carthage became the county seat in 1848 after being moved from Pulaski in eastern Panola County. The name also comes from Mississippi, named for another town there named Carthage after the ancient city in north Africa.

In 1953 the county of Panola decided that their historic 1885 courthouse (a twin to Shelby County’s courthouse) had become obsolete so a new modern building was constructed a few blocks away. Although the new location was chosen the old courthouse was still torn down and sold for scrap. The old courthouse square is now a small park which leaves you scratching your head wondering why? What a waste.
