![]() October 04, 2008 | Nacogdoches County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #46: Nacogdoches County (Nacogdoches, Texas) Nacogdoches, known as the oldest town in Texas, was first visited by Europeans when the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto arrived in the mid 1500’s, but the town had been a Coddoan Indian village since at least 700 B.C. Legend says that twin brothers settled towns three days apart from each other, one being Nacogdoches (named for the Nacogdoche Indians) and the other present day Natchitoches (French spelling of the same tribe) in Louisiana. The county of Nacogdoches was one of the original counties formed with the Republic of Texas. The town of Nacogdoches served an important role in the young republic and was the home of many of its most famous citizens, including Sam Houston, James Long and four signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, John Roberts, Charles Taylor, Robert Potter and Thomas Jefferson Rusk. In 1923 Stephen F. Austin State University was founded in Nacogdoches. On the morning of February 1, 2003 debris from the space shuttle Columbia fell over Nacogdoches and the surrounding area. For a town with such rich history you might expect to find a grand old courthouse…or at least a courthouse on the old town square…or at the very least a building that resembles in some way an actual courthouse. None of these things are true in Nacogdoches. In fact we drove right past it, sat at a red light right next to it, and never realized that we were looking right at the Nacogdoches County courthouse. Built in 1958, to replace a much nicer 1911 building, it sits at a busy intersection just outside of the downtown area. |
