![]() October 05, 2008 | Angelina County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #47: Angelina County (Lufkin, Texas) In the 1690’s Spanish missionaries in East Texas befriended the Hasinai Indians of the area. One of the most influential of the Hasinai was a girl who the priests named Angelina (Little Angel). Her friendship with both the Spanish and French Christians resulted in her becoming a translator and ambassador to her people. Her village became known as Angelina’s Village and the nearby river the Angelina. Present day Angelina County traces its name back to this remarkable Indian girl. Founded in 1882, the seat of Angelina County was named for Capt. Abraham P. Lufkin, Galveston cotton merchant, city council man and son-in-law of the Houston East and West Railway president who developed the town. Angelina’s courthouse is another ugly 1950’s building, but they have a really cool tree. |
