![]() October 07, 2008 | Trinity County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #48: Trinity County (Groveton, Texas) Established on February 11, 1850, Trinity County was named for the Trinity River that runs through it. The river was named La Santisima Trinidad by explorer Alonso De León in 1690. When the Trinity County courthouse in Pennington burned down in the early 1880’s, the county seat was moved to nearby Groveton which boasted a rail line and was closer the county’s center. Named for a grove of blackjack oak trees the town was originally called Grovetown before being shortened by the citizens to Groveton. The present courthouse was built in 1914.
