![]() October 08, 2008 | Houston County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #49: Houston County (Crockett, Texas) The first county established by the Republic of Texas, Houston County and its county seat of Crockett combine two of the most famous names in Texas history. Houston County gets its name from Sam Houston, former governor of Tennessee, General of the Texas Army, hero of the Battle of San Jacinto and first President of the Republic of Texas. He would serve a second term as President and then as governor of the State of Texas. Houston helped guide the young Republic into annexation by the United States and was as unpopular as he was popular for his stance on such things as Indian relations and succession prior to the Civil War, which he was very much against. It was Houston who signed the order to establish Houston County on June 12, 1837. The land for a county seat was donated by Andrew Edwards Gossett, a settler of the area from Tennessee. Gossett named the new town after a friend and neighbor of his father’s from Tennessee, David Crockett. Legends has it that Crockett camped nearby the present day town in January of 1836 on his way to San Antonio and eventually the Alamo where he would earn his place in Texas history. The 1883 Houston County courthouse was sold for $1 in 1939. The catch was that the buyer had to have the building demolished…but was able to sell the material for profit. The county got a dollar bill, a cleared lot and a brand new WPA courthouse.
