Freestone County Courthouse

October 10, 2008 | Freestone County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #51: Freestone County (Fairfield, Texas)

The Texas legislature created Freestone County in 1850. There seems to be some uncertainty about where the name came from. It could either be from the nature of the stone found in the area, its mineral free water or for the type of peaches that share the name Freestone.

When the county was formed the town of Mound Prairie was chosen as the county seat. The name was immediately changed to Fairfield for some unknown reason. The chamber of commerce claims it was named for Fairfield, Alabama where some of the original settlers had moved from. The only problem with that explanation is the fact that the Fairfield, Alabama was not founded until 1910, sixty years after Mound Prairie became Fairfield. And before that it had been known as Corey. Maybe there was an area around Corey known as Fairfield prior to 1850 but I have not seen anything to support that. It remains a mystery.

The Freestone County courthouse was built in 1919 in the Classical Revival style. The county’s fourth courthouse is a little plain, especially on the inside, but nice.
