Hill County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #53: Hill County (Hillsboro, Texas)

Governor Peter Hansbrough Bell signed the bill creating Hill County on February 7, 1853. The county and the county seat, Hillsboro, were both named for Dr. George Washington Hill, a surgeon from Tennessee who served as Secretary of War under President Sam Houston and the later as a legislator from Navarro County (from which Hill County was created from).

On New Year’s day of 1993 a fire started in the 1890 Hill County courthouse and gutted the entire building. A piece of Texas history had been lost, but from the ashes the building was restored to its former glory.
