Johnson County Courthouse

October 14, 2008 | Johnson County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #54: Johnson County (Cleburne, Texas)

Named for Middleton T. Johnson, a soldier in the Mexican War and Civil War before serving as a legislator, Johnson County was formed in 1854. The third county seat of Johnson City, Cleburne ( originally known as Camp Henderson) served as Civil War outpost before being incorporated in 1871. Cleburne is named for Irish born Patrick Cleburne who many of the men from Camp Henderson served under during the Civil War. Cleburne was killed during the battle of Franklin. Former governor James Hogg worked for the Cleburne Chronicle in the 1860’s.

The Johnson County courthouse in Cleburne was built in 1913 and can be seen from a pretty good distance as you enter town. With ornate stained glass, the large tower is even more impressive on the inside.

That’s 54 courthouses down…just 200 more to go!
