![]() October 15, 2008 | Ellis County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #55: Ellis County (Waxahachie, Texas) Most likely named for Richard Ellis, President of the Convention of 1836 and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Ellis County was created on December 20, 1849 and Waxahachie was chosen as the county seat. Waxahachie is a Wichita Indian word for “Cow Creek” or “Buffalo Creek”, although some Native American linguists believe it actually translates into “Fat Wildcat”. The 1897 Ellis County courthouse is widely regarded as one of the finest (if not the finest) old courthouses in Texas…and for good reason. Designed by famous courthouse architect, J. Riely Gordon, the Ellis County courthouse exemplifies everything about Texas’ old courthouses that make driving hundreds of miles to see them worth it. On top of all that, the courthouse was recently restored and reopened in 2002.
