Navarro County Courthouse

October 16, 2008 | Navarro County Courthouse

Texas County Courthouse Project #56: Navarro County (Corsicana, Texas)

José Antonio Navarro was born in 1795 in San Antonio, then under Spanish rule. He became a friend of Stephen F. Austin and served as a Texas politician when it was still a part of Mexico, when it was a Republic and finally when it was a state. Navarro signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836 and served an important role in the drafting of the Texas State Constitution. In 1846 the state created Navarro County and named it in his honor. Navarro chose the name of the new county seat himself in 1848. He named it Corsicana in honor of his father’s birthplace, the Isle of Corsica.

Texas Governor Beauford Halbert Jester was born in Corsicana in 1893.

Navarro County’s courthouse is an impressive structure built in 1905.

An interesting note on the photo below: Do you notice anything strange about the flags? Scroll down to the bottom to find the answer.

The American flag only has 34 stars. I didn't notice this until I was going through the pictures and I doubt very many people, if any, notice it when they walk into the courthouse. The 34 star American flag flew from 1861 to 1863 during the bulk of the Civil War and yet there it is, hanging in the middle of the Navarro County courthouse right next to the Texas flag.
