![]() October 17, 2008 | Henderson County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #57: Henderson County (Athens, Texas) Henderson County was named for James Pinckney Henderson, the first Governor of Texas. Henderson was appointed attorney general of the Texas army and served as Secretary of State for the new Republic after Stephen F. Austin’s death. He was then appointed Texas minister to England and France where he helped secure the recognition of Texas by those countries. He was elected the first Governor in 1845 and while serving the office took command of the Texas volunteers during the Mexican-American War and led the Second Texas Regiment to victory in Monterrey. Athens became the county seat in 1850 and was named by Dulcina A. Holland, a step-daughter of one of the founders in hopes that it would become a cultural center in the spirit of the Athens in Greece. As it turns out Athens, Texas was able to provide something very important to the American culture…the hamburger. Fletcher Davis owned a café on the courthouse square in Athens in the 1880’s and is said to have invented what we now know as the hamburger. Local businessmen helped send him and his sandwich to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and the rest is history. The current courthouse in Athens was built in nine years later. |
