![]() December 30, 2008 | Liberty County Courthouse Texas County Courthouse Project #59: Liberty County (Liberty, Texas) Over the last three centuries the area of Liberty County has been claimed by Indains, French, Spanish, Mexicans, Texans and Americans. Near the old Spanish settlement of Atascosito on the Atascosito or Atascosita Road a settlement was created in 1831 called Villa de la Santísima Trinidad de la Libertad, later shortened by Anglo settlers to Liberty. Liberty served an important role in the area during and after the Texas Revolution. Sam Houston practiced law there in the 1830’s and 50’s and owned two homes in Liberty until his death. In 1818, near present day Liberty, a group of French refugees loyal to Napoleon Bonaparte founded the short lived Champ d’Asile on the banks of the Trinity. Although many theories exist about exactly what Napoleon’s officers, including his chief of artillery, were doing deep in the East Texas woods, it lead to some interesting results including the publication of the novel L'Héroine du Texas in France. Even though the colony was unsuccessful, the French quickly romanticized the idea and L'Héroine du Texas was a fictionalized story of two of the Texas refugees and is probably the first novel ever set in Texas. Liberty had six other courthouses until the current one was finally built in 1930.
